Mother-Daughter Relationship Counselling

I’m a specialist in female psychology and have spent 20 years studying mother-daughter relational dynamics, commonly known as The Mother Wound. When this relationship is problematic the painful affects reach far and wide.

You can access mother-daughter relationship counselling very easily from anywhere in the UK. Your appointment is via FaceTime or WhatsApp video call, or by audio phone call. If you’re local you can come to my Kirby Muxloe practice.

The important thing is that you know you can reach out to me. An appointment can be arranged swiftly.

I work with individuals, not couples. If you are suffering as an an adult daughter or mother, please get in touch.

It is rarely spoken about

For many women it is the hardest thing, to say, to admit and to put it into words. Because all your life, probably, you’ve felt it, sensed it, but never really spoken it.

There is a tremendous amount of repressed hurt in relation to our mothers. Over the last 18 years I’ve helped hundreds of women who live with the pain of feeling misunderstood at best, unloved at worst.

If this is you then you know that feeling, that loss, that troubled attachment, that deep disappointment, the emptiness - you know how the mother wound feels because you’re living with it and the affects on your current life.

The mother wound

We grieve for the kind of mothering we never had. The loss is the wound. It’s always there, never fully heals over and at times it opens wide and hurts like mad.

Most of the women I work with have either lost a wonderful mother, or they are struggling to come to terms with what their mother could never give them. These are the women who are angry. And ashamed. And in pain. On a very deep level these women are living with the mother wound.

The pain of contrast

You may see others mothers and adult daughters, and know it’s a very different relationship to yours.

They are close. They share things. They spend time together. They turn to each other for understanding and support. They go shopping together. They enjoy each other. They share the celebrations and the tragedies of their lives. There is a deep mutual love and compassion. They are there for each other.

The impact

Sometimes it’s really hard to think of our mum as being emotionally absent or critical. But sadly we know the impact because we live with it.

We are each unique and impacted in different ways but there are some common themes. For example:

You might find it difficult to recognise your own emotions and needs. In fact you may deny your needs.

You may notice how you fight for affection. Or how you long for maternal love.

Or struggle with feeling insecure and anxious within your relationships.

You may be fiercely independent.

Or find it very hard to open up to someone.

You may feel detached or cut off from your feelings.

People may find you hard to reach.

You may be experiencing the same dynamics as ‘back then’ within your current relationships.

You may gravitate to people who can’t relate emotionally.

Mother-daughter relationship counselling is all about healing. Your healing. You may or may not want a relationship with your mother. You may feel confused as to what you want, need, should feel, shouldn't feel.

I understand that it is not always an easy step to take, yet reaching out for professional help can be a significant turning point in your life.
